Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political education is a cornerstone of peaceful and participatory democracy, equipping citizens with the knowledge and skills to engage constructively in the electoral process. In the Nigerian context, where electoral violence poses a significant threat to democratic stability, political education has been identified as a key strategy for fostering peaceful elections and reducing conflict (Bello & Yusuf, 2023). Yola North Local Government, Adamawa State, has experienced varying degrees of electoral violence in past elections, often linked to political rivalry, misinformation, and socio-economic disparities. Through targeted political education programs, voters can be sensitized on the importance of non-violence, the rule of law, and the value of their votes (Kareem & Abubakar, 2024). This study examines the role of political education in preventing electoral violence in Yola North, highlighting its impact on fostering a culture of peace and accountability.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Electoral violence remains a persistent challenge in Yola North Local Government, undermining public trust in democratic institutions and deterring voter participation. While political education initiatives have been implemented to address this issue, their effectiveness is often constrained by limited reach, inadequate funding, and resistance from political actors who benefit from a culture of violence (Ahmed & Musa, 2024). This study seeks to examine the extent to which political education contributes to the prevention of electoral violence in Yola North, identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement.
